Elections Chairman Benjamin Abalos admitted Thursday he met with First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo at the Wack Wack Golf and Country Club in March but denied they discussed matters concerning the multi-million dollar contract for the government’s national broadband network (NBN) project with China’s ZTE Corp.

In an exclusive interview with GMA News, Abalos said that aside from Mr Arroyo he also met briefly with Transportation and Communications Secretary Leandro Mendoza and Jose “Joey" de Venecia III, son of Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr.

The claim of the son of Speaker Jose De Venecia Jr was right. First Gentleman Jose Miguel "Mike" Arroyo indeed met businessman Jose "Joey" De Venecia III last March at the Wack Wack Golf and Country Club in Mandaluyong City.

However, Jesus Santos, the lawyer of the First Gentleman, told radio dzBB on Wednesday that the "first time meeting" was just a "chance encounter." He also reiterated that Mr Arroyo did not coerce the speaker's son to "back off" from bidding in the government's multi-million dollar National Broadband Network (NBN) project.

It could well be a scandal waiting to happen.

The usual suspects, in a manner of speaking, are there: on one hand, a losing bidder and an opposition leader taking advantage of his parliamentary immunity through a fiery privilege speech; on the other, a host of powerful men and political lieutenants all connected to the President.

But what makes the national broadband network deal most disturbing are two firm facts.

For one, this is the second big controversy to link and drag down President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and Commission on Elections Chairman Benjamin Abalos.

First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo dismissed claims of influencing the son of Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. to back off from competing for the national broadband network (NBN) project in favor of China’s ZTE Corp., his lawyer and spokesman Jesus Santos said yesterday.

Santos made the statement after Jose de Venecia III named Arroyo as the supposed mystery man who told him to withdraw from the NBN contract.

Arroyo flew to Hong Kong a day before De Venecia III named him as among the facilitators of the ZTE contract.

Santos said Arroyo has no intention to evade any investigation. He said Arroyo’s departure last Monday had nothing to do with the ZTE controversy since it was planned even before he underwent heart surgery last April.

Businessman Jose de Venecia III said yesterday First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo shoved a finger in his face and ordered him to “back off” from bidding for the multimillion-dollar national broadband network project. De Venecia, son and namesake of the House Speaker and a majority stockholder of Amsterdam Holdings Inc., said it was Mr. Arroyo who was the “mystery man” and the “very influential” person who asked him at a “reconciliatory meeting” at the Wack Wack Golf & Country Club in Mandaluyong City to let Chinese firm ZTE Corp. bag the $330-million broadband deal. “It was the First Gentleman who told me to back off,” De Venecia told the Senate Blue Ribbon committee at the start yesterday of the hearing on the questionable broadband project.
