The only clear message from the $329-million broadband mess between the Philippines and Chinese firm ZTE Corp. is that the government is “shameless" and the country is “hopeless," said Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Oscar Cruz over the weekend. “It has to be admitted with great pity that the present administration is shameless, and the Country is thus hopeless. In addition to many scandalous graft and corruption in government that insults the intelligence of many and assault the sensibility of the general public, the said deceitful transaction has effectively made the personalities therein involved as consummate national liabilities," Cruz said.

Citing a pending case before the Supreme Court, Malacanang is keeping
quiet on the controversial $329-million (P16 billion) broadband deal
with China’s Zhong Xing Telecommunication Equipment (ZTE) Corp.
Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita, in his weekly press conference with
Palace reporters, said President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo believes it
would be more appropriate for the courts to take up the issues raised,
including the alleged $198- million bribe to government officials.
Iloilo Vice Governor Rolex Suplico has filed a petition before the Supreme Court seeking the scrapping of the contract.
The ZTE deal was reportedly signed on April 21, 2007, at the height of
