Former elections commissioner Virgilio Garcillano was discharged from a hospital in Manila City after undergoing a biopsy last Wednesday.

He is said to suffering from a prostate illness.

QTV Balitanghali quoted Garcillano's lawyer Ed Tamondong as saying that the biopsy was conducted at the Chinese General Hospital and Medical Center in the Sta. Cruz district.

Details about the operation were not disclosed.
The report said Tamondong had previously confirmed that his client was having prostate problems.

Garcillano had assured senators that he will appear before the Senate hearing into the "Hello, Garci" wiretap controversy on September 21.

He missed the first hearing last September 7, citing health reasons.

In a letter dated September 6, Tamondong wrote: "My client respectfully requests ... that he be scheduled to appear on the subsequent hearings of the committees, preferably on Friday (which seems to be the day for Senate investigations), Sept. 21, 2007."

Tamondong added that, "He (Garcillano) may not be physically fit to sit long hours in the proceedings by next Friday, September 14, because on September 11 he will undergo a medical process, a sort of minor surgery to extract a tissue from his body, for biopsy purposes."

In the wiretap recordings, Garcillano's voice was heard speaking with a woman who sounded like President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

The two allegedly discussed how to ensure a one million vote lead for Mrs Arroyo in the 2004 presidential elections. - GMANews.TV
