The Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Wednesday expressed readiness to accommodate until midnight Thursday "deadline beaters" who seek to run in the barangay (village) and Sangguniang Kabataan (youth council) elections.

Comelec Spokesperson James Jimenez said the commission's offices nationwide are prepared to work late to serve candidates who will be filing their respective certificates of candidacy (COCs) on October 18.

"We are ready for these deadline beaters. We will burn the midnight oil just to serve them," he said in a statement posted at Comelec web log.
Comelec offices will be open starting 8 a.m. on October 18.

"Because candidates seem to have made it a habit to wait for the 11th hour before they make official their bid for any public office, we expect our offices to be deluged with prospective Barangay and SK bets on October 18 to file their certificates of candidacy at the last minute," he said.

Jimenez said the number of candidates nationwide could easily reach more than a million.

There are 671,920 village and SK positions that are up for grabs nationwide, he added.

The poll body started receiving COCs on September 14.

The campaign period will officially start on October 19 and will end on October 27, two days before the scheduled balloting. - GMANews.TV
