Malacañang on Saturday downplayed reports that pardoned former president Joseph Estrada would support the impeachment complaint against President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

Radio station DZBB reported that Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said the opposition is just reviving the issue for media mileage.

Ermita said the Palace knows there is a process to be followed in impeaching the President.

He said an impeachment complaint has already been initiated in the House of Representatives and members of the opposition need to wait for the one-year ban to lapse before they could file fresh complaint.
Estrada on Saturday said he supports the plan of the opposition to file a stronger impeachment complaint against Mrs Arroyo.

However, Estrada said he would let opposition lawmakers prepare the complaint.

House Minority Leader Ronaldo Zamora said on Saturday that the opposition would still push though with its bid to lodge an impeachment complaint against Mrs Arroyo.

Zamora said the opposition would decide on its own without taking into consideration the executive clemency granted by the President to Estrada on October 25 or six weeks after the deposed leader was convicted of plunder by the Sandiganbayan Special Division on September 12.

The United Opposition earlier said it would file a “stronger" complaint on Monday, at the resumption of sessions in Congress. This is despite an earlier impeachment complaint filed before the chamber last October 5 by lawyer Roberto Rafael Pulido.

Zamora said the opposition’s lawyers were threshing out details of their impeachment complaint, especially on how it could “fortify" Pulido’s complaint.

“Ang pwede mong gawin, take control of the situation, get a vote. Pag nakuha ang boto, kayo ang impeachment managers (In effect, it is saying that we should make sure the Pulido complaint gets the votes. And when it does, that’s the time when we as the impeachment managers can fortify it)," he said.

Estrada, had promised to support President Arroyo’s anti-poverty programs, after he was released from his detention place in Tanay, Rizal.

However, the former leader, in an interview during his visit to the San Juan City public cemetery last Thursday, said he would remain with the opposition. - GMANews.TV
