Manila's 6th District Rep. Bienvenido Abante Jr on Wednesday broke his silence on the “cash gift" controversy, saying money changed hands during last week’s meeting in Malacañang.

GMA’s 24 Oras quoted Abante as saying that he himself received P500,000 after the breakfast meeting called by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and attended by some 185 majority administration congressmen.

The Lakas congressman said there was no mention where the money was intended for.

“I received the amount of money in good faith. It’s P500,000… I just want to tell the truth," Abante said. In the report, Abante described the Malacañang meeting as “casual," noting that Senior Deputy Executive Secretary and concurrent Presidential Legislative Liaison Office chief Joaquin Lagonera was present during the meeting.

Abante also said President Arroyo’s attendance was brief, saying she merely went around the room, shook hands with the congressmen and immediately left.

“It’s just a usual breakfast meeting with the President. She shook hands with the congressmen, went around every table," Abante said.

When the meeting was over, Abante said he was preparing to leave when men wearing white Barong Tagalog and black pants went into the room and distributed paper bags. While he was leaving the room, Abante said he took a peek and saw money inside the bag.

In the interview, Abante said he saw nothing wrong with the distribution of the cash gift, even as he admitted there is a need for Malacañang to explain what the money is intended for.

“I never thought it to be a bribe, or for the President to court my favor on something else," Abante said, noting that he is keeping the money intact and is willing to return the amount “if there’s something wrong with it." - GMANews.TV
