Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno is opposed to the moves in Congress to postpone once more the election for barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan officials scheduled on Oct. 29.

“I am not in favor of the suspension of the barangay elections because, if you look at the SK members, you will now have SK chairmen who will be 25, 26, 27 years old, (which is) in violation of the law," Puno said in a chance interview after a Cabinet meeting in Malacanang.
“We are making representations with the different Congress committees through our department representatives that we are advising against the postponement of the barangay elections," he told newsmen.

The House committee on suffrage and electoral reforms approved last Friday a bill that defers the Oct. 29 barangay and SK elections until 2009.

Previous congresses have enacted measures resetting the grassroots elections two or three times already that is why some SK leaders are way past the age requirement under the law. - GMANews.TV
