Acting Comelec Chairman Resurreccion Borra made the request on Saturday in anticipation of various election-related offenses and disputes arising during the polls. “There is a need for judges to open their courts on Monday in anticipation of possible arrests for varied election offenses," he said. He added the high court can give “invaluable support in the conduct of free, orderly and credible elections that enhance the political stability and socio-economic progress of our country." As this developed, Borra said the Department of Budget and Management has earmarked P255.151 million for the police and military for the said elections. He also announced that some P400 million pesos would be given to teachers as transportation allowance for elections day duties. “The allowance will be distributed equitably to public school teachers who will once again offer their venerable services to the country as we cast our ballots on Monday," said Comelec spokesman James Jimenez. Jimenez said the additional transportation allowance is apart from the honoraria that would be released to the teachers serving either as chairpersons or members of board of election inspectors. He said the allowance would be given to teachers upon getting the election paraphernalia from the municipal or city treasurers on Monday morning. For its part, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) assured the poll body of “uninterrupted electrical power supply during the critical days of the election." In their letter to the Comelec dated Oct. 22, 2007, Meralco said that contingent measures were already in place to ensure uninterrupted power supply to the polling and canvassing centers within the franchise area of Meralco. As specified in the deputation, Meralco’s contingent plans took effect Saturday up to October 29, 2007. “We would like to assure you nonetheless, that in the event of a power outage caused by trouble beyond our control, we will restore electricity as soon as possible" Meralco said in the letter. Meanwhile, Jimenez claimed the Comelec’s voter information drive in various shopping malls was a big success. “The public’s response to our information drive was very encouraging. In every mall we visit, we are swamped with people who are obviously raring to go to the barangay and SK polls. For us, it is indicative of the people’s trust in the electoral system," he said. - GMANews.TV
