Casualties left in the wake of violent incidents related to the village and youth polls have swelled to 53 as of early Tuesday morning. Of this number, 28 were killed.

The Philippine National Police (PNP), in its tally as of 5 a.m., said 24 people have been wounded while 357 people have been arrested for violating the election gun ban.

A candidate for barangay (village) chair has also been reported missing.

The PNP said the violence since the start of the election period in September 29 has claimed the lives of six candidiates for barangay chair, four bets for kagawad (committee member), nine village officials, three other government officials and seven civilians.
Wounded were four candidates for village chair, a candidate for kagawad, seven other village officials, two members of the National Police and 10 civilians.

Two hours after the polling precincts opened on Monday morning, the PNP had recorded 23 deaths and 20 injuries because of election-related violent incidents (ERVIs).

Despite such reports and events of alleged poll fraud, the PNP leadership as well as the Commission on Elections (Comelec) had described the barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (youth council) elections as "generally peaceful."

In its tally Tuesday, the PNP had recorded 38 shooting incidents, four ambushes, an abduction, two harrassment attempts, a report of ballot snatching, two "atrocites" carried out by communist or terrorist elements and three other violent episodes which were not described.

Of those who were arrested for violating the election gun ban, 325 of them were civilians, nine were members of the PNP, two were military personnel, while two were government officials.

Lawmen confiscated 316 firearms, nine explosives, 55 assorted deadly weapons and 3,139 pieces of ammunition.

The Sun.Star newspaper reported Tuesday that at least four people were killed on election day itself.

It said that two candidates were shot to death by suspected New People's Army (NPA) rebels in Silvino Lobos town in central Samar province shortly before polling started, forcing authorities to cancel the balloting in four villages because frightened voters failed to show up, he said.

Another candidate and his follower were fatally shot by men in a school on southern Basilan island. One of the attackers, who was armed with an M16 rifle, was arrested, the police said. - GMANews.TV
