On the eve of All Saints' Day, political tension stemming from Monday's village and youth council elections erupted at a school in Quezon City as supporters of a village bet burned election paraphernalia.

Q-11 television reported Wednesday night that the supporters managed to break down the gates of the Payatas Elementary School where the counting was still ongoing.

The crowd rushed inside the classrooms where the counting was held and took several tally sheets and election paraphernalia, setting fire to some of them.
Schoolteachers conducting the counting were herded into the principal's office.

The Q-11 report said no Commission on Elections (Comelec) official was at the site. Neither was any Comelec official available for comment at the time of the incident.

Earlier, radio dzBB reported that a team of fully armed police and military personnel rushed to the school to respond to a commotion involving supporters of local village bets.

Police said information reaching them indicated the supporters were getting unruly and shaking the gates of the school while the counting of votes was going on inside.

As of 8 p.m., the report said a Special Weapons and Tactics team and a group of soldiers in full battle gear were deployed to the area to "disperse" the crowd if needed. - GMANews.TV
