ANGELES CITY -- An election watchdog said it does not endorse Pampanga gubernatorial candidate Fr. Ed Panlilio in the upcoming elections. People's Education and Advocacy for Clean Elections (Peace) spokesman Rene Cambranero said their group is a broad coalition of religious leaders concerned with voters' education to assist voters in choosing their candidates wisely in the coming elections and not with the election bid of any candidates. Cambranero said the coalition adheres to the constitutional principle of the separation of church and state. "As citizens we have to respect that principle, otherwise we will be creating a very dangerous precedent," he said. Earlier, Panlilio filed his candidacy for the Pampanga gubernatorial post. He is running against Governor Mark Lapid and Board Member Lilia Pineda. Sources said although his candidacy was widely supported by religious leaders, Panlilio filed his candidacy even without the imprimatur of Pampanga Archbishop Paciano Aniceto. Panlilio is said to be the "Third Force" fielded to oppose traditional politicians and introduce improvements in the province's governance. "Our coalition's mission is strictly to educate the people on how to choose the right candidate and to vote conscientiously. We will not name names of who these candidates are. It is for the people to decide who these candidates are. Like Dagupan-Lingayen Archbishop Oscar Cruz said, it is up to the people to vote according to the candidates' morality, capability and winnability," said Cambranero. He said Peace continues to conduct a series of voters' education assemblies aimed at educating and guiding voters. They will also continue doing the activities in every town and city of Pampanga, he said.
