Philippine Election, Politics and Controversies

While trying to save face for failing to release canvassing updates for the last two days, the National Movement for Free Elections (Namfrel) suffered yet another setback in its operations: A power outage.

Electricity at the La Salle Greenhills, San Juan was temporarily cut off at around 3:50 p.m. Tuesday.

For a few minutes, the rumbling sound of a power generator was heard at the ground floor of the school premises.
Electric fans and water dispensers hummed back to life, but only for a few minutes. The generator's growl then fell silent, then the power ran out again.

Emerging from the room where the quick count was being conducted, a sleepy and tired Namfrel chair Edward Go sat before a table where mediamen were stationed in the hallway.

Asked if they have electricity inside the office to support their operation, a worried Go said, "just enough to keep the computers working."

He added that, "malas ngayon pa nagka-problema. May problema raw sa San Juan transmission (It's unfortunate that we encountered the problem now. The San Juan transmission was having some problems)."

Go said Namfrel can still come out with the tally but if the power supply would not be restored soon, photocopying of the results will be a problem.

After 30 minutes, however, the power was back up and Go smilingly announced that Namfrel's volunteers would be busy working their best with electricity on their side.

Namfrel issued its last tally on Saturday May 26, a day after they transferred operations from the lower floor from La Salle's gymnasium to a room beside the school cafeteria.

Eric Alvia, Namfrel's secretary general, promised that they will release a tally update today (Tuesday). - GMANews.TV
