According to GMA News’ Saksi early Thursday, the Maguindanao special board of canvassers finished the count despite strong protest from the opposition. The report said Zubiri garnered 195,823 votes or a 128,000 lead over Pimentel’s 67,111 in the recanvassed of votes based on Maguindanao municipal certificates of canvass. The Maguindanao result is deemed important because it will decide who between Pimentel and Zubiri would occupy the last Senate seat. In the official but incomplete Comelec national tally, Pimentel is in 12th place with 10,865,397 over Zubiri’s 10,753,836. If the Maguindanao recanvassed votes would be added to the Comelec national tally, it would give Zubiri a 13,122 vote lead over Pimentel. The report said the result of the recanvassed Maguindanao votes is practically the same as that of the previous senatorial vote tabulation in the province. “We will definitely overturn the lead of Pimentel now. So this will seal the victory for Migz Zubiri," Zubiri’s lawyer Nonoy Ortigoza told GMA News. The Maguindanao canvassing stalled for weeks following GO’s allegations of electoral fraud in the province where many opposition and other senatorial candidates received zero vote and TU scoring a 12-0 shutout win over the opposition. GO also wanted the exclusion of the Maguindanao results in the national canvassing due to rampant poll irregularities there. To resolve the matter, the Comelec created a special board of canvassers to re-canvass the Maguindanao votes using the municipal count. In the recanvassed Maguindanao vote, some candidates who previously received zero vote also got zero vote. The chairman of the special board of canvassers lawyer Emilio Santos said: “It’s normal in any election that certain candidates would receive zero vote." “There’s no problem with the document…they appeared to be regular," Santos added. The report said opposition did not observe the special canvassing because it is maintaining its protest against counting the Maguindanao votes. Poll watchdog Lente said the conduct of the special canvassing was orderly and transparent but the integrity of the tabulated municipal certificates of canvass remained questionable. “These municipal COCs should have been kept intact…properly sealed in the ballot box. As I see it now they are just handed over without any seal at all," Pastor Trimor of Lente said. “Those documents could have been manufactured," he said. The new Maguindanao COC is set to be flown to Manila Thursday afternoon, the day the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on a petition by Pimentel for a temporary restraining order (TRO) challenging the special canvassing of the Maguindanao votes. Pimentel also asked the high tribunal to exclude the Maguindanao votes from the national count. - GMANews.TV
