MANILA, Philippines - A militant teachers group on Tuesday protested in front of the Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) calling for the resignation of President and General Manager Winston Garcia.
Led by the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) the teachers said that they were protesting what they described as the “oppressive and exploitative" policies of GSIS introduced by Garcia.
Hundreds of public school teachers marched to the main gate of the GSIS complex in Pasay City at around 10 am.
They held a program and set up a “complaint desk" that documented the grievances of hundreds of teachers.

Two weeks before President Arroyo’s eighth State of the Nation Address (SONA) on July 28, her critics in the broad Left begin designing what they say would be her biggest effigy. “It will be one of the highlights of the protests. The design is complicated. It will be unveiled there. It will involve several parts and some of it will be suspended on air,” Bayan chair Renato Reyes told abs-cbnNEWS.com/Newsbreak. Reyes said visual arts professionals and students are involved in the design. It will be the eighth effigy of President Arroyo that the movement will construct.

MANILA, Philippines—Students and teachers over the weekend said they would launch a text messaging and e-mail campaign to urge employees of private companies to reject the appointment of Romulo Neri as head of the Social Security System.
The militant League of Filipino Students and the Alliance of Concerned Teachers described Neri as a “cowardly bureaucrat” with “zero credibility.”
Neri earned the ire of various student and teacher groups when he refused to answer questions at a Senate inquiry on President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s response to his report of a bribe offer to approve the $329-million National Broadband Network deal. He pleaded “executive privilege” in his communications with the President.
