Arroyo order for fast release of pork barrel meant for Cha-cha railroading - group

President Arroyo’s order for the speedy release of the Philippine Development Assistance Fund, also known as the pork barrel, was meant for the railroading of Charter change that would extend her term beyond 2010, the fisherfolk alliance Pambansang Lakas ng Kilusang Mamamalakaya ng Pilipinas (Pamalakaya) said Monday.

In a statement, Pamalakaya national chairman Fernando Hicap said the timely release of pork barrel is meant to rally the pro-Arroyo lawmakers “to score a giant kill for Cha-cha."

Senators score NSC chief for not naming MILF financiers

MANILA, Philippines – The chief of the National Security Council should not have announced knowing the financiers of the rogue elements of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) if he was not yet ready to give their names, much less file charges against them.

This was the sentiment aired on Monday by Senator Richard Gordon, and his colleauges took on a similar line against Norberto Gonzales, who made the announcement earlier on the same day.

In a report aired over radio dzRH, Sen. Panfilo Lacson thought the revelation as a "scripted story." The government, he said, should have just filed charges against those who financed the MILF rebels before making an announcement.

House committee to formalize position on Cha-cha

MANILA, Philippines - The House committee on constitutional amendments will vote today to formalize its plan on the proposed shift to a federal from a unitary form of government, La Union Rep. Victor F. Ortega (1st district) Monday said.

"The matter will be discussed fully. After everyone is heard, a voting will follow. Irrespective of outside influence, we will continue with the voting," Mr. Ortega told BusinessWorld in a telephone interview.

The voting will cover the stand on Charter change, the method of instituting the change and the agenda of the amendment.

Arroyo says no all-out war vs MILF; Lanao Sur clash erupts

MANILA, Philippines - The government is not waging an all-out war in Mindanao despite the ongoing military offensive against the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), President Arroyo said Monday.

President Arroyo gave the assurance in her speech at the groundbreaking ceremony of the Global Gateway Logistics City in Clark, Pampanga.

"I say to the Filipinos, to the world, to our Muslim brothers in the South, to the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) through our Kuwaiti friends, there is no all out war," the President said.

The remark came as a television report said that the military offensive continued Monday and that it has reached Lanao del Sur.

MANILA, Philippines – Senators on Monday backed a petition before the Integrated Bar of the Philippines seeking the disbarment of Presidential Commission on Good Government Chair Camilo Sabio for allegedly interfering in a Court of Appeals case being handled by his younger brother, a justice of the court.

“It’s about time he became accountable for his actions. As PCGG chair, he has been getting away with a lot without explaining,” said Senator Francis Escudero. Sabio is to take the witness stand today before a panel of retired Supreme Court justices investigating alleged bribery and other anomalies in the CA.
