Erap pardon won’t affect opposition’s Arroyo impeach bid

With or without the pardon granted to former President Joseph Estrada last month, the opposition would still push though with its bid to lodge a “stronger" impeachment complaint against President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, House Minority Leader Ronaldo Zamora said on Saturday.

Ang sasabihin ko hindi ‘yan makakaimpluwensya sa amin. Ilang beses kami nagkita ni Pangulong Estrada, at ni minsan ‘di binanggit ito (I can tell you his pardon will not influence our impeach bid. I met with Estrada a few times since his release, and he never brought up the matter with me)," Zamora, San Juan City representative, said in a radio interview.

Zamora said the opposition would decide on its own without taking into consideration the executive clemency granted by President Arroyo to Estrada on October 25, six weeks after the latter was convicted of plunder by the Sandiganbayan. “Ang tingin namin at nabasa ko sa diyaryo okay sa kanya ang impeachment complaint. Whatever it is, we have to decide. Di kami dapat magdesisyon based on whether there is a pardon or not. Ito ba may pagasang magtagumpay o wala? Kaya yan ang decision namin (From what I see in the news, an impeachment complaint against Arroyo is okay with Estrada. But whatever it is, we have to decide for ourselves. We cannot base our decision on a pardon for Estrada)," he said.

Also, Zamora said the opposition would push through with the complaint with or without the support of House Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr.

Tingnan natin. Ang nakikita ko ngayong interesado sa impeachment complaint ang opposition. Wala pa kaming nakukuhang bilang galing kay Speaker de Venecia na handa sila mag-consider ng impeachment (We’ll see. The way I see it now, it’s just the opposition that is interested in the impeachment complaint. We have not received word on whether de Venecia will endorse it)," Zamora added.

Estrada, had promised to support President Arroyo’s anti-poverty programs, after he was released from his detention area in Tanay, Rizal.

But the former leader, in an interview during his visit to the San Juan City public cemetery last Thursday, said he would remain with the opposition.

Zamora said that if Estrada and President Arroyo indeed struck a deal in exchange for the release of Estrada, impeachment did not appear to be part of it.

Kung meron silang kasunduan di kami kasali sa kasunduang ‘yan. Gagawin namin ang kailangang gawin, may obligasyon kami sa taumbayan (If they struck a deal on the impeachment issue, we in the opposition are not in on it. So we will continue to do what we think is our duty to the people)," he added.

He also said that if Estrada were to ask them not to push through with the impeachment bid, the opposition would have to “decide for ourselves."

The United Opposition earlier said it would file a “stronger" impeachment complaint against President Arroyo this coming Monday, during resumption of sessions in Congress. This is despite an earlier impeachment complaint filed before the House of Representatives last October 5 by lawyer Roberto Rafael Pulido.

Zamora said the opposition’s lawyers were threshing out details of their impeachment complaint, especially on how it could “fortify" Pulido’s complaint.

Ang pwede mong gawin, take control of the situation, get a vote. Pag nakuha ang boto, kayo ang impeachment managers (In effect, it is saying that we should make sure the Pulido complaint gets the votes. And when it does, that’s the time when we as the impeachment managers can fortify it)," he said. - GMANews.TV
