This was the counsel offered Friday night by a Catholic priest to Commission on Higher Education (CHED) head Romulo Neri, who has so far clammed up on a supposed P200-million bribe offer. “This is not about politics. This is about his moral responsibility to expose or condemn a crime," said Fr. Ben Moraleda of the Kaalagad Katipunan Kristyano. Moraleda, who is also vice president of the Freedom from Debt Coalition (FDC), said Neri may have lost a golden chance to “bail out of a sinking ship" when he kept quiet on the bribe. In an interview on dzBB radio last Wednesday, Neri refused to confirm or deny that he was offered a P200-million bribe to support the NBN project that Chinese firm ZTE won. “Karma is not only about avoiding what is wrong, but especially doing what is right. Bad karma, therefore, will still happen if you fail to do your duty for the people," Moraleda advised Neri. Moraleda also said that the ZTE “brouhaha" has proven once again that the moral fiber of this administration has totally decayed and deteriorated. “Scratch a liar and you’ll find a thief. This wise dictum has repeatedly found validation in Ms. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and her corrupt administration. The ZTE scandal is just the most recent confirmation of this. It shows how immoral and cynical the national leadership has become," he said. The FDC earlier called for an independent and impartial investigation of Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairman Benjamin Abalos, who allegedly brokered the deal. It also demanded the immediate relief of Department of Transportation and Communications Secretary Leandro Mendoza and Assistant Secretaries Lorenzo Formoso and Elmer Soneja from their respective positions. “Let us nip in the bud this illegitimate and unnecessary debt while it’s still early. We challenge the administration to muster enough courage to punish all those who are guilty and to void this contract with finality. To dillydally is not an option," said FDC president Ana Maria Nemenzo. - GMANews.TV
