Cabinet Secretary Ricardo Saludo defended the deal with the Chinese firm ZTE Corp. and said that the project already went through review by the concerned government agencies. “Ang proyekto at kontratang pinapasukan ng gobyerno dumadaan sa mahigpit na proseso, at pagkatapos malagdaan, dumaan sa Department of Justice. Matapos lahat ng prosesong ito, walang nakitang malaking problema (This project passed through tight screening measures. After it was signed, it went through the Department of Justice. After all reviews, there was no problem)," Saludo said in an interview on dzXL radio. He added that while a case against the deal is pending before the Supreme Court, all the “noise" questioning it has so far come only from Congress and the media. Last Friday, several business groups called for the scrapping of the deal, and the ouster of Commission on Elections Chairman Benjamin Abalos Sr who allegedly brokered the project. Despite the clamor for the deal's cancellation, Saludo said the government cannot afford to “dilly-dally" on the contract as this would send a negative message to prospective investors. “Nagiging masama sa pananaw ng tao sa gobyerno at negosyante kung tayo magbabaligtad dahil lang nagkaroon ng gulo sa media at Kongreso. Hindi tayo pwede magpatumpik-tumpik sa kontrata dahil lang nagkakaroon ng malaking gulo sa media at Kongreso (It will send the wrong signals to investors if we scrap a deal on the say-so of Congress and media. We cannot dilly-dally on such a contract)," he said. - GMANews.TV
